We created a 'helper' script available that can be used with sshfs_nfs.app for mac to automount at login. The app is simply a wrapper for sshfs-helper.sh and assumes the script exists in your home folder.

After it is working you can add a shortcut into your dock by navigating to your home folder on your Mac open and then dragging the sshfs_nfs.app into your dock. If you need to reconnect to the shares just press the app and it will connect or reconnect.For additional folders you must create the destination folder like - mkdir /o2home

MacFUSE, a FUSE module for macOS, has been around in various forms for quite some time. It seems that each time Apple releases a new OS version, there are challenges in getting MacFuse installed. This is simply the latest iteration with MacFUSE (4.2.4) on macOS Monterey (12.2.1) on an Apple M1 (Max) chipset, plus a bit on using it with sshfs.


Then, you can use sshfs to mount the file system locally. You can also specify what the entry point is on the remote machine, rather than just starting at the root of the drive (/), you can have it start in your home folder () or any folder, really. replace with the entry point you would like, or leave it empty to mount the root of the drive.


Finder does not show this folder remote as remote, but instead as macFUSE Volume 0 (sshfs). This can become extremely annoying if you have more than one folder mounted. Because then you do not know which one to use, as "Finder" decided to rename them.


Mount the directory using the sshfs command. We suggest you add these additional flags to the command to make it be more "Mac-like" : -ocache=no , -onolocalcaches and -o volname=hpcc_home . For the last option, '-o volname' is the name that displays in the Finder title bar, so change it for difference file folders (e.g. use -o volname=hpcc_scratch for your scratch folder). After running the command, enter the password for logging into HPCC and the FUSE drive icon will show on the desktop of your local Mac computer.


With your .ssh/config in place you can copy entire folders between the hosts with (remote to local) scp -r remotehost:remotedir localdir or (local to remote) scp -r localdir remotehost:remotedir, so for a single one-off operation, you might not even need sshfs.


That works great. However, I would also like to use sshfs, which mounts the remote filesystem. While ssh seems to play nice with multiple keys, I can't find a way to get sshfs to use the correct private key ("id_rsa.2").


The Win-sshfs application enables you to configure and use SSHFS connections on computers running Microsoft Windows. To use Win-sshfs, you must download and install the following components (some of these may be installed on your system already):


In order to use sshfs, the linux client on which you are working must have FUSE and SSHFS installed. If you need to install FUSE and SSHFS, please see the documentation for your particular linux distribution or the SSHFS web site at:


For certain ThayerFS shares or folders, the macOS graphical sshfs client may mount properly but then you get permissions denied errors when trying to access the mounted filesystem. This issue is most-commonly caused by the way permissions are translated and interpreted by the macOS Finder. To work around this issue, you need to mount the filesystem from the command line using the '-o defer_permissions' option to sshfs. So, to mount the "bigproject" research folder, you would do something like this from a shell prompt (the backslashes are for clarity - they can be omitted and everything put on one line):


UPDATE: The most recent versions bundle sshfs as a separate download. If you want to install sshfs then you need to install the MacFUSE core as above and then install the separate sshfs package. The main difference is that if you want to use the comand line version as described below you need to symlink to the sshfs binary in the sshfs.app that you will have dropped into your applications directory. To do this simply type: sudo ln -s /Applications/sshfs.app/Contents/Resources/sshfs-static /usr/local/bin/sshfs Note if you have a sshfs binary already installed it's recommend you do use the symlink so that you are using an up to date version of the sshfs binary. As the gets updated so will your binary. (I would suggest renaming the old binary first before creating the symlink).


If it's worked you should see the volume show up in the finder. If not and you see a message like, "Remote system disconnected" then try running the same command again with this debug switch after sshfs:


...then I have other sshfs mounts that I can connect to after the VPN is connected. They seem okay, but the other mount points completely freeze up. Also, any subsequent bash sessions (in or out of the affected filesystem) are frozen.

@smlefo: You can not mount sshfs using the method you have given. I would suggest taking a look at the documentation. SSHFS is designed to be used by the user, not by root. Any mount using 'sudo' is not being mounted by the user and will fail.


Exact error description has already been given by wolfie2x, Robert and smlefo. And I echo Robert's sentiments regarding severity, I'd consider this to be a critical bug as well, as it seems it's not limited to sshfs but also to samba and possibly others.


Steps to reproduce:1) Mount a remote file system. The command I used was "sshfs User@Server:/ /media/Server -o port=10000,allow_other,default_permissions".2) Open the remote file system in Nautilus. Open a text file from the remote file system in Gedit.3) Shut down the ssh server.4) Try do something with the remote file system in Nautilus (e.g. to open a file). Try to do something with a file opened in Gedit (e.g. save it).5) Both Nautilus and Gedit will hang. (Force Quit may or may not close the frozen window but the process keeps running in any case.)


- Open a terminal. ls. Terminal freezes.- Open a terminal. cd [TAB]. Terminal freezes.- Open in Nautilus. Window appears contentless, then freezes.- Right click -> Unmount on the sshfs mount icon on the Desktop background. Desktop background freezes.


Does anyone have an idea what to do about this?Can this issue be addressed in sshfs or do shells, Nautilus and so on have to handle such problems?What do these programs do if other non-sshfs shares hang?


My emacs session froze when sshfs disconnected. After reading everything related to this bug and other similar bugs I have found a workaround but not a solution. My system disconnected overnight but did not freeze after logging in with these linessudo fusermount -uz /mnt/remotesudo sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 xx@xx: /mnt/remoteIn the morning the remote server did not recieve the changes to the file although they were apparently saved. Mount returned fuse but not sshfs in its table and so these lines were used to reconnect without problemssudo fusermount -uz /mnt/remotesudo sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 xx@xx: /mnt/remote -o nonemptyNote that ServerAliveInterval 15 is also in the config file but while it keeps a remote login alive (not overnight however) it does not effect the sshfs system.


I had one, did a forced, lazy unmount, but a number of processes were still blocked (terminals, gvim, nautilus). The solution was to kill -9 the sshfs process (which was still running). This immediately un-froze everything.


sshfs makes any remote SSH-accessible file accessible like a regular local file, with the same ancient C file I/O API blocking functions 'fopen(...)'/'fread(...)'/'fwrite(...)' in '/usr/include/stdio.h'.


The consideration of using some kind of modern approach to work with files is good until you ask to rewrite all legacy application. That is not feasible approach as ubuntu should be rewritten as well. I have the Ubuntu 10.04.2 with gnome desktop and the taskbars freeze, gedit freeze, nautilus freeze when I disconnect (and/or reconnect) to the VPN.kill -9 all sshfs processes can not help immediately. I need to wait 5 min for taskbars are restarted but nautilus and gedit still do not work.That means reboot. I believe that it is just a bug of sshfs implementation that is not able to report network problem as a file problem gracefully. That is a great architecture gain if the top level application need no knowledge if the file is local or network. As for me the bug has no workaround yet. The process list is in attachment.


@Marat BNNormally I would agree, except NFS is ages old and does not freeze applications/the entire operating system when the Network File System goes away. The same applications that freeze when sshfs mounts go away do not freeze when NFS mounts go away.


When the remote computer mounted with sshfs loses the connection, the local computer (Ubuntu 11.04) freezes all related processes (but not the entire computer) indefinitely. That means usually Nautilus freezes first, and the Terminal Emulator freezes second when you try to tab-complete the mountpoint for the umount command line.
